When might an athlete need more salt in his diet?

Anytime you are exercising in warm or hot climates for long periods of time, like endurance sports, soccer and especially when covered in football gear, you need to make sure your sodium intake is adequate. To be sure most athletes in these conditions will get enough sodium from a normal diet and from making sure they stay hydrated during the activity with a sports drink that contains the amount of sodium lost in sweat (such as Gatorade). Under extreme conditions of heat and long activities, some athletes are recommended to use sodium/salt tablets or specialized electrolyte/sodium formulated drinks before the event but they should also still hydrate/replenish during the activity with the sports drink.
