Are there any machines that work especially well on the obliques? I'm currently exercising six days a week … three strictly cardio and three resistance training (with a short 20 minute jog on the treadmill at the end) … but while every other part of my body seems to be responding well to the program the belly fat doesn't seem to want to go away.

Answer:

Yes, there are exercises for the obliques (core exercises that can help make them stronger and bigger), but there is no such thing as spot reducing and therefore no exercise can target your belly fat. You must continue to eat fewer calories than you burn and as you lose fat your body will take it from where it’s genetically programmed to take it from first, second, third, etc. Everyone is a little different and it changes with age. There is some evidence that aerobic exercise may draw from the stomach (visceral fat) area more than soley cutting calories so make sure you do both.

If you still want specific exercises for the obliques, use option 2 below to locate them.

You have 3 options with us in setting yourself up to get that belly fat off and you will if you follow the program.

  1. You can visit one of our licensed health clubs using the club finder. The fitness professionals in our licensed health clubs can give you direct service for all your fitness goals including nutrition needs (non-clinical).
  2. Alternately, if a club visit is not a viable option, you can receive all your diet, supplement and weight loss (or muscle gain) needs online from the dotFIT program. Go to the dotFIT home page to register and log in. From there simply follow instructions for creating your program and setting your goal. Set your goal in 10 pound increments, losing 1-2 lb/wk, and then the next 10 as necessary and so on until you get to your goal weight or body fat). The dotFIT program will give you the meal plan outlines, with the proper calories and protein to get started, track intake and monitor results. It will also give you your supplement recommendations and exactly how to use them. Every week when you enter your weight and/or body fat, the program will tell you what to do until you reach your goal including recreating menus as necessary. There is also a complete exercise program you can use to create the proper program to accomplish your goal – and again, just answer the simple questions and your exercise program will be created. However, if possible, we recommend one of our trainers to help you get started. On the dotFIT website you’ll also see a category called “Learn” where you will find many frequently asked questions and answers.
